To understand the growth cycle of plants you also have to understand the dormancy cycle of plants as well.
The Growth Cycle
In nature plants go through a heavy growth cycle typically from the spring to late summer, depending on your area. This is due to an increase in daylight hours as well as a warmer, more desirable climate. However, this does not only apply to plants that reside outdoors. Interior plants can also have a boom in their growth if given the exposure to natural light and controlled temperatures. This is why plants do so well in green houses, we can recreate the ideal environment in a controlled setting.
What is plant Dormancy
Just like the boom in growth a plant will go through in the spring and summer, plants also have a dormancy cycle. This is when your plant will drop leaves, wilt, and can almost look dead. Dormancy isn’t always a bad thing. It is a time that the plant will strengthen their roots to ensure it’s survival. If cared for properly during this time the results can be a much healthy, heartier plant. However, if given too much water or fertilizer during this time the plant can burn and die.
Signs of Dormancy in Plants
If you see your plants are not growing, dropping leaves, yellowed leaves, water is not being absorbed, most likely your plant has gone into dormancy. This is time to adjust care to ensure the plants survival.
Choosing the right plant for your environment
Not all plants go into dormant periods. This is especially helpful when choosing a plant for an office or home that has little natural light. When we work with our clients we asses the light levels to ensure we choose plants that will stay green all year round.
Low Light Plants
If your space doesn’t offer a good amount of natural light, your best options are a low light plant. These are less likely to be affected by the changes in weather and give you the option of staying green year round. Some great options are Snake Plant (Sansevieria), ZZ Plant, Pothos, Compact Janet Craig, Ivy and many more.
